Day 3: Going Green

Kind of amazing to see this photo now, and look up on my walks these days and see only branches and sky.  Rejuvenating both the tree and the earth, these leaves are wonderfully recycled each year.

We're doing much better in that department as well.  Everything that we don't eat goes back into our compost bin (or tossed into the woods, when that is full).  And since we're not eating any meat or dairy these days -- that means *everything*.  Nice and simple.  And organic.  And helpful to the earth.

Here's to going green this year.  And to the return of Spring ;-)

Day 2: The Harvest

We think a lot more about the harvests these days.  We are buying much of our food, and almost all of our vegetables on the local economy.  And when possible, we are buying organic (aka "Bio" in Germany).

This means needing to be flexible in what veggies are offered during your trip to the market based on seasonal availability, unlike the base commissary which flies in produce from all over the world.

But we're good with that trade-off.  The prices seem reasonable for the food they are able to stock, and we are very comfortable with the strict adherence to Bio standards in Europe.

So here's looking forward to the next harvest, in late Spring, so we can start buying veggies grown right here in the area.  Otherwise they tend to come from Southern Europe where the growing season is much longer.
